Trucking Tips to Help You Stay Cool This Summer

Truckers spend a lot of time on the road all year long, so it’s important they understand how to adjust to the seasons so they can remain as comfortable as possible in their cabs. Summer is just about to finally arrive here in Virginia, and with it comes hotter and more humid weather. There are plenty of things that change about the roads in the summer, including the presence of more vacationers and joy riders. But beyond just standard roadway safety, it’s also important to consider how you’ll adjust to the temperatures and the weather.

With this in mind, here are a few trucking tips from our truck service in Wytheville, VA that will help you stay cool and comfortable this summer:

  • Apply and reapply sunscreen: Trucker’s arm is absolutely a thing, so you should be sure you’re frequently applying and reapplying sunscreen to protect yourself from constant sun exposure to the same areas on your body. Choose a high-SPF sunscreen, and even consider wearing a sun sleeve or putting a window cover or visor in your vehicle. This isn’t just to help you avoid a weird tan line, but also to prevent some significant sunburns that could make your journeys extremely uncomfortable.
  • Monitor the weather: Summer months come with extreme heat and major thunderstorms, the latter of which can cause some very slick roads. It’s important not only to make sure you’ve gotten your maintenance done, but to keep an eye on the weather before you head out so you can know how best to prepare yourself and your vehicle.
  • Hydrate: Always have a case or cooler of water in your cabin with you, as well as a few healthy snacks. Staying hydrated doesn’t just help you stay healthy and focused, but it can also do a lot to cool you down on a hot day. A frozen water bottle can also double as an ice pack if you’re dealing with any soreness on your journey.
  • Check your AC: If you’re having any issues at all with your air conditioning, now’s the time to get the system checked out. The last thing you’re going to want is to have to spend days on the road in hot, muggy weather without any air conditioning available to you, so perform whatever maintenance is necessary now before the heat really picks up.
  • Restock your emergency kit: In the event your vehicle breaks down, you’re going to want to make sure you have a fully stocked emergency kit with some important supplies. These supplies should always include first aid items, flashlights and tools, but during the heat of summer it’s also especially important you keep some extra water, sunscreen, hats or visors, sunglasses and other items on hand to protect yourself from the sun and heat.

These are just a few ways you can prevent yourself from getting overwhelmed by the summer heat when you’re on the road over the next few months. For more tips, contact Complete Truck Service Inc. or visit our truck service in Wytheville, VA.
